Is Casual Cosplay Breaking the Internet?

From the Little Mermaid to the Sexy Wendy’s Girl there is an exploding community of cosplayers who are getting their come up with subtle references to their favorite characters.

When you think of cosplay, you usually imagine detailed costuming, Technicolor wigs, and exaggerated props paying homage to their favorite characters including, but not limited to Deadpool, Sailor Moon, and much…much more. Now if you’ve ever found yourself wandering downtown and gotten yourself caught in front of a comic convention you have more than likely seen the pure enthusiasm that engulfs anything within its proximity.

Recently though, this sacred art has taken on a new definition and has turned into something a little different. Now, cosplayers are taking a more casual approach and it’s being accepted more and more into the community. The main reason for this being is you can use this casual approach, pretty much anywhere and no one would give you a second glance.

A user on Reddit spoke out saying, “Has anyone ever tried to build their outfits off of casual outfits from anime characters? I think it would be cool to casually cosplay all the time without people thinking you’re a filthy weeb trash.” There was a resounding answer of YES across the platform. Users have offered alternative ideas to the more precise interpretations, try-hard cosplayers are getting a little more creative with their everyday look, bringing elements of cosplay into their day-to-day wardrobe.
The idea is beginning to go fairly viral right now as challenges from Reddit and hashtags on Instagram #casualcosplay, and believe it or not over 11 million views on TikTok. This scene is beginning to explode across social media becoming more widespread, and is starting to dominate as a subculture.
